Vector Viz Research
Earthquake simulations produce vast amounts of surface and volumetric temporal data. Analysis of this data is non trivial and may lead to new scientific insights. We are developing methods to visualize scalar and vector data to allow comprehension of the large amount of information and while doing so and enable the scientists to understand the seismic wave characteristics. We leverage advances in graphics processing to draw oriented and textured geometry interactively to provide an array of visualization techniques available to a scientist.
In volumetric visualization occlusion is a problem because the outer regions will hide the internal regions. We are developing interactively tunable methods to resolve occlusion and enable view of interesting physics. The user is able to change camera position and visualization settings on the fly. Giving a scientist the flexibility to adjust settings interactively enhances intuition of the visualization. Our system allows a scientist to use advanced display technology to further intuition. One such state of the art advanced display is a virtual reality environment called “StarCAVE” at CalIT2. The StarCAVE surrounds the user with seamless displays and stereo vision, giving the closest experience to actually being inside of the physical event being simulated. A StarCAVE can also be mirrored on a personal workstation.
